Western Loudoun's selection of places to eat recently added a little more spice when My Deli & Café celebrated its Grand Opening on Saturday,January 12. Located in the Old Moorcones Theater and more recently Sweet T's on East Main Street in Purcellville, My Deli provides a unique dining choice. Purcellville Mayor Bob Lazaro, Council members Steve Varmecky, and Tom Priscilla along with family members Vana Vatikiotis and their sons Tasos and Stelios and residents celebrated the occasion with a ribbon cutting. A delicious luncheon buffet included a tasting of some of the fine homemade Greek delicacies that owner George Vatikiotis is known for throughout Northern Virginia.
George is not a newcomer to the restaurant business. My Deli & Café is George's fifth restaurant. He moved to the United States in 1972 and soon opened his first store with his brother in Falls Church. They later opened up another store in Herndon, moved back to Athens, Greece to open up their third restaurant before moving back to the United States and opening up another store in Herndon. As to running a deli, well, if anybody understands about deli sandwiches, it is George. He worked in one of the finest delis, the Carnegie Deli in New York City that helped teach George the fine art of making a quality deli sandwich. George learned much more, baking fresh breads and preparing fine desserts.
The restaurant offers a wide variety of Greek favorites like, spanakopita, ravani and great baklava. However, if Greek food is not your thing, his fresh homemade breadsand pastries, ice cream, and pizza will more than tempt your palate. His fresh breads he bakes every morning include rye, double crust French, cranberry walnut, sun-flower seed and whole wheat.
As for the pizza,it's not on the menu but if you're lucky enough to come on the day that Vatikiotis is making pizza, you're in for a real treat. Starting with a homemade crust, Vatikiotis piles on feta cheese, olives, tomatoes, oregano and, of course, a special sauce to make a Greek pizza fit to satisfy any taste.
Two of the most popular sandwiches are the Italian Sub and the deli's signature sandwich, the Deli Sub. The Italian Sub has ham, Genoa sa-lami, mortadella, gouda, tomatoes, lettuce, onions and a homemade vinaigrette dressing. The Deli Sub has Genoa salami, feta cheese, calamata olives, herbs, let-tuce, tomatoes, onions, and a homemade Greek dressing. Sandwich prices range from $5.95 to $6.95.
While preparing his delicious sandwiches behind the deli counter, Vatikiotis is always willing to talk about his delicacies and he is never short on smiles. He loves what he does and it shows. While all customers are treated with the same courtesy, George sees some of the same faces again and again. Customers come back to George because they know they will get what they come to expect. Vatikiotis genuinely wants to make sure the customer enjoys his food that he puts his heart and soul into preparing.
"One of the reasons our sandwiches are so good is the fresh bread," said Vatikiotis. He makes rolls and loaves of bread every morning. "Warming the sandwich on the Panini grill," according to George,"makes the sandwiches taste even better." One item is not found on the menu on Vatikiotis' Deli even though it's served in large portions. It's called family tradition and customer satisfaction.
My Greek Deli & Café is owned by George and his wife Vana Vatikiotis and their sons Tasos and Stelios. My Deli & Café is located at: 860 East Main Street in Purcellville. Hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The deli phone number is 540-751-2077.
